Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is calling for more people to join as retained (part-time) firefighters. If you’re looking for a new challenge, why not come along to one of our ‘have a go’ events and find out firsthand what the role entails?
Unlike their wholetime colleagues, retained firefighters are not based on a fire station but instead often have other employment and respond to call-outs via a pager. For this reason, retained firefighters need to be able to reach the retained station within six to eight minutes (times and distance requirements vary for each station, please refer to our website for more information). RBFRS is currently looking for retained firefighters at the following fire stations:
- Hungerford
- Lambourn
- Pangbourne
- Wargrave
- Mortimer
- Crowthorne
- Maidenhead
The ‘have a go’ events below are open to anyone who is interested in becoming a retained firefighter at any of the above fire stations. During the day you will be able to try out some written tests that potential firefighters need to pass and physical tests to gauge fitness levels. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to meet firefighters already in the role and to have a tour of the fire station. Other RBFRS staff will be on hand to explain more about the application process for those who are interested.
The events are being held on the following dates:
Saturday, 27 February 9:30am (prompt start) Maidenhead Fire Station (Bridge Road)
Saturday, 5 March 10am – 4pm (drop in) Lambourn Fire Station (Newbury Street)
You don’t need any specific qualifications or experience to become a retained firefighter, but you must be over 18 years old and have a good standard of fitness. If you would be interested in attending then please register your interest by emailing: recruitment@rbfrs.co.uk
