Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is calling for more people to join the Service as retained (on-call) firefighters. If you are motivated, ready for a challenge, a team player and would like a role that fits around your lifestyle, this could be just what you are looking for!
If you think retained firefighting might be for you then why not come along and see what the role entails? The ‘have a go’ event offers potential new recruits the opportunity to talk to firefighters already in the role, as well as talk to RBFRS staff about the recruitment process. The day will offer the perfect opportunity to have a go at some of the fitness tests and day-to-day challenges firefighters face.
Unlike their wholetime colleagues, retained firefighters are not based on a fire station but instead often have other employment and respond to call outs via a pager. For this reason, retained firefighters need to be within six to eight minutes of the fire station (times and distance requirements vary for each station, please refer to our website for more information).
RBFRS is currently recruiting for retained firefighters at the following fire stations:
- Hungerford;
- Lambourn;
- Pangbourne;
- Wargrave;
- Mortimer;
- Crowthorne; and
- Maidenhead.
The ‘have a go’ event below is open to anyone who thinks they might be interested in becoming a retained firefighter:
Saturday, 25 February, between 10am and 2pm. Maidenhead Fire Station (Bridge Road, Maidenhead, SL6 8PG).
Saturday, 4 March, between 10am and 2pm. Newbury Fire Station (Hawthorn Road, Newbury, RG14 1LD)
You don’t need any specific qualifications or experience to become a retained firefighter as RBFRS provide all training in-house at the training centre in Whitley Wood, however due to the demanding nature of the role, you must be over 18 years of age and have a good standard of fitness. If you fit the criteria for the role and would be interested in attending the event then please register your interest by emailing: recruitment@rbfrs.co.uk
