Fire Extinguisher Maintenance
Extinguisher servicing is vitally important. Fire extinguishers should be periodically inspected to ensure they will work correctly in an emergency.
Over time, the contents of non-gaseous fire extinguishers can corrode the inside of the fire extinguisher canister or body, and the stresses caused by the highly pressurised contents can weaken body seams. In addition, if fire extinguishers are not properly maintained, seals, valves and levers can stick or start to deteriorate. Not all defects are visible to the naked eye, so it pays to have your fire extinguishers checked by a trained person.
It is not advisable to purchase second hand fire extinguishers. Old fire extinguishers may not have been regularly serviced and may have defects such as those noted above.
